Citrus Capital of Queensland

Situated on the banks of the Burnett River near its junction with the Boyne and Auburn Rivers, Mundubbera has a population of around 1300 with a further 1200 residing in the surrounding district.  The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “meeting of the waters”.  The town is a vibrant, progressive community thanks to the wealth of primary products here. The district is among the State's leading producers of citrus, stone fruit, nuts, grapes, asparagus, beef and timber.  Mangoes, avocadoes, lychees and melons are also grown in abundance, with grazing, piggeries and dairying being other important industries. Fruit pickers come from around Australia and the world during the busy cooler months.

Predatory bugs produced here in Australia's largest insectary have substantially assisted in reducing the use of pesticides on crops both locally and around the country.  Peanuts and grain are grown on the rich land of the Gurgeena and Binjour Plateaux, which offer scenic rural vistas.  The Ceratodus (lung fish) is found only in the waters of the Burnett and Mary Rivers. This ancient throwback to prehistoric species actually breathes air and can sometimes be glimpsed late in the afternoon near rocky outcrops. Canoeing on these rivers can be rewarding with sightings of these unique fish, the elusive platypus and a diversity of bird life.

Approximately 25 minutes drive away, the rugged Auburn River National Park has a wild and remote beauty. Dry rainforest species and vine scrub line the upper banks as the short walking trail descends into a gorge. The riverbed looks for all the world like a giant has had a game of marbles — with granite boulders the size of houses thrown about and perched on top of each other.  It's amazing to imagine the force of water that created this wild scenery. Bird life and rock wallabies abound in the area - just sit quietly and wait — which makes it a photographer's dream.

Accommodation in Mundubbera consists of excellent caravan/camping parks with onsite cabins and camp-o-tel permanent tents, restored school buildings with loads of charm and affordable motels.
